How to Use the Paint Calculator

  1. Measure Your Room: Calculate the total length (perimeter) of all walls you plan to paint. Enter this value along with the wall height.
  2. Subtract Non-Paint Areas: Enter the number of standard-sized doors and windows in the room. The calculator will automatically subtract their area.
  3. Define Paint Properties: Enter the coverage area per gallon (or liter) as specified on the paint can. 350 sq ft per gallon is a common average. Then, enter the number of coats you plan to apply (2 coats are recommended for best results).
  4. Calculate: Click the button to see the total amount of paint you'll need to purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Should I use a primer?

Yes, using a primer is highly recommended, especially when painting over a dark color with a lighter one, or on new, unpainted drywall. A primer ensures better adhesion and a more even final color, which can sometimes reduce the number of top coats needed.

What if my walls have texture?

Textured walls (like stucco or popcorn ceilings) have more surface area than flat walls. As a rule of thumb, add about 10-20% to your total paint estimate to account for the texture.
