What is Freight Class?

Freight class is a standardized classification system used in the United States for LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) shipping. Created by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA), it establishes a uniform pricing structure for all types of commodities. There are 18 freight classes, ranging from 50 (lowest cost) to 500 (highest cost).

While other factors like handling and liability play a role, the primary determinant of freight class is **density**. This calculator determines your shipment's density (in pounds per cubic foot) and assigns it to the corresponding NMFC freight class. Correctly identifying your freight class is essential for receiving accurate shipping quotes and avoiding costly reclassification fees from carriers.
