Understanding the Calculation

This calculator converts horsepower (a measure of mechanical work) into electrical power (Watts) and then uses the principles of Ohm's Law to determine the current (Amps) required at a given voltage. The formulas differ slightly for single-phase and three-phase systems.

Formulas Used

Three-Phase: Amps = (HP × 746) / (Voltage × 1.732 × Efficiency × Power Factor)

Single-Phase: Amps = (HP × 746) / (Voltage × Efficiency × Power Factor)

Note: For simplicity, our calculator assumes a standard Power Factor (PF) of 0.85, which is incorporated into the calculation.

What is Power Factor (PF)?

Power Factor is the ratio of working power (kW) to apparent power (kVA). In simple terms, it measures how effectively incoming power is used. For this estimation, a typical power factor of 0.85 is assumed in the calculation (included within the phase factor). For precise calculations, use the PF value from the motor's nameplate.

Is this value the same as the NEC Full-Load Current?

No. This calculator provides a calculated estimate. The National Electrical Code (NEC) provides standardized Full-Load Current (FLC) tables (like Table 430.250 for three-phase motors) that must be used for sizing wires, circuit breakers, and overload protection. The nameplate Full-Load Amps (FLA) should be used for setting thermal overloads. Always refer to the NEC for safety and compliance.
