How to Use the HVAC Load Calculator

Select Climate Zone: Choose the climate zone that best represents your location. "Hot" for areas with long, hot summers (e.g., Southern US), "Cool" for areas with long, cold winters (e.g., Northern US).

Understanding BTU and HVAC Sizing

BTU (British Thermal Unit) is a unit of heat energy. In HVAC, BTU per hour measures the rate at which a system can cool or heat a space. Correctly sizing your HVAC system is crucial:

Undersized System: Will run constantly without being able to properly cool or heat your home, leading to high energy bills and premature wear.
Oversized System: Will cool or heat the space too quickly and shut off, a process called "short cycling." This leads to poor humidity control, wasted energy, and increased wear on components.

A true HVAC load calculation (known as a Manual J calculation) is very complex and considers dozens of factors like insulation levels, window quality and orientation, ceiling height, air leakage, and number of occupants.
