Deconstructing an Air Freight Quote: Beyond the Per-Kilogram Rate

Calculating the total cost of an air freight shipment involves more than simply multiplying the chargeable weight by a rate. A comprehensive air freight quote is a composite of multiple charges, each covering a different aspect of the transportation process. Understanding this breakdown is key to accurately comparing quotes from different forwarders and managing your logistics budget effectively.

The final price you pay is typically composed of three main categories: the base freight charge, weight-based surcharges, and various flat fees. This calculator allows you to input values for each of these components to build a complete and realistic cost estimate.

1. The Basic Freight Charge

This is the fundamental cost of moving your goods from the origin airport to the destination airport. It's calculated using the formula:

Basic Freight Charge = Chargeable Weight (kg) × Air Freight Rate ($/kg)

The Chargeable Weight is the higher of the actual gross weight or the volumetric weight. The Air Freight Rate is the price per kilogram for a specific lane (e.g., Shanghai to Los Angeles) and is subject to constant fluctuation based on supply, demand, and capacity. It is the core component of your shipping cost.

2. Weight-Based Surcharges

In addition to the base rate, airlines and forwarders apply several surcharges that are also calculated based on the chargeable weight. These fees cover variable operational costs. The two most common are:

  • Fuel Surcharge (FSC/MYC): This is a variable fee applied to cover the fluctuating cost of jet fuel. It is a significant and unavoidable part of air freight pricing and can sometimes be as much as the base rate itself.
  • Security Surcharge (SSC): This fee covers the costs associated with security screening measures at airports, such as X-ray scanning and other mandatory security protocols.

The total for these is calculated as: Total Surcharges = (Fuel Surcharge $/kg + Security Surcharge $/kg) × Chargeable Weight (kg)

3. Flat Fees (Per Shipment)

Finally, a number of administrative and operational fees are applied on a per-shipment basis, regardless of the weight. These are fixed costs for handling the documentation and physical movement of your cargo at the terminals.

  • Air Waybill (AWB) Fee: A documentation fee for the creation and processing of the Air Waybill, which is the primary contract of carriage for air freight.
  • Handling / Terminal Fees: These charges cover the cost of moving the cargo within the airport terminals at both origin and destination, including loading, unloading, and storage for a short period.

It is important to note that this calculator covers the main **airport-to-airport** charges. It does not include costs such as customs brokerage, duties and taxes, pickup from the supplier (origin), or final delivery to the consignee (destination). These are typically quoted separately.

How to Use the Calculator
