Understanding Taper Calculations
A taper is a conical shape where the diameter changes gradually over a length, commonly used in machining, engineering, and manufacturing. This calculator computes taper dimensions (large diameter, small diameter, length, angle, or ratio) based on known inputs.
The taper angle is calculated using tan(angle) = (Large Diameter - Small Diameter) / (2 * Taper Length). The taper ratio is the change in diameter per unit length. Use at least two dimensions and the length to compute the others.
Taper Examples
Large Diameter (in) | Small Diameter (in) | Taper Length (in) | Taper Angle (°) | Taper Ratio (per in) |
---|---|---|---|---|
2 | 1 | 4 | 7.125 | 0.125 |
5 | 3 | 10 | 5.711 | 0.1 |
10 | 8 | 6 | 9.462 | 0.167 |
How to Use the Taper Calculator
- Enter the large diameter of the taper (in inches or millimeters, if known).
- Enter the small diameter of the taper (in inches or millimeters, if known).
- Enter the taper length (in inches or millimeters).
- Enter the taper angle (in degrees, if known) or leave blank to calculate.
- Select the unit (inches or millimeters).
- Click "Calculate Taper Dimensions" to compute the missing dimensions.
Taper Angle Comparison

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a taper ratio?
The taper ratio is the change in diameter per unit length, calculated as (Large Diameter - Small Diameter) / Taper Length.
Can I calculate a taper without knowing both diameters?
Yes, provide one diameter, the taper length, and the taper angle to calculate the other diameter.
