How to Use the Asphalt Calculator

  1. Select Units: Choose your preferred measurement system, either Imperial (feet for length/width, inches for thickness) or Metric (meters for length/width, centimeters for thickness).
  2. Enter Dimensions: Input the length and width of the area you are paving.
  3. Define Thickness & Density: Enter the desired final, compacted thickness. The default density (~145 lb/ft³ or ~2322 kg/m³) is a standard average, but can be adjusted.
  4. Add a Waste Factor: It is highly recommended to add a 5-10% waste factor to account for uneven subgrade and material loss.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is asphalt sold by weight (tons) instead of by volume?

Asphalt is sold by weight because its volume changes significantly with temperature. Measuring by weight is the only way to ensure you are getting the exact amount of material you paid for. This calculator converts the volume you need into the weight you need to order.

What is the difference between compacted and uncompacted thickness?

Asphalt is delivered loose and hot, then compacted with a heavy roller. This process reduces its thickness by about 20-25%. You should enter the desired **final, compacted thickness** into the calculator. For example, to achieve a 3-inch compacted depth, a contractor will likely lay about 4 inches of loose asphalt.
